“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”
Team Canada is always evolving — a unique delegation is selected for each recognized event.
Only a small number of events are recognized by the Team Canada Iaido Program (TCIP) committee each year. For such events, a delegation consisting of (1) Members who will be competing, (2) Prospects who will be observing, (3) A Coach to evaluate the member(s) performance, and (4) A Manager to handle the travel and participation logistics, will be sent. A delegation may be as small as two individuals; one Member and one Coach.
As the criteria for nomination to the team is meant to be a high bar, the TCIP may decide not to send an official delegation to an event, even if Canadian Iaidoka are present and competing. These individuals may represent their own dojos, as permitted by organizers of the event.
The Team Canada Iaido Program Committee has final say on who is on the team, and consensus by committee members is required. For full details on the selection of Team Canada Iaido members, see the Internal Nomination Procedure (INP) document.
Objective criteria
A scoring system will be used as an indicator of success at past tournaments, and will be used in conjunction with a log of a candidate’s performance and development to select a final team. A democratic process within the TCIP Committee. The selectors’ decisions are final.
The scoring system is a living document, with results being accounted for since the year of the last Canadian National Iaido Championships or Five (5) years, whichever is greater.
A) Performance: Performance at national, and international tournaments* will be scored based on the following
Medal Win (Gold) = 6 points
Medal Win (Silver) = 4 points
Medal Win (Bronze) = 2 points
*Currently recognized events include: the Canadian National Iaido Championships (CNIC), East Coast Iaido Taikai (EC), PNKF Iaido Taikai (PN), and Mu Mon Kai Open Iaido Taikai (MMK)
B) Travel Bonus: Bonus points will be awarded to candidates based on distance traveled to medal in a regional, national, or international tournament
Category A 200-500 km = 0.2 points
Category B 501-1500 km = 0.5 points
Category C 1501-2,500 km = 1 point
Category D 2,501-5,000 km = 1.5 points
Category E 5,000+ km = 2 points
C) Tie Breakers: Candidates that are tied for total score will then differentiated in order of the following priorities
Number of times placed within the eligible time frame
Number of first place finishes
Number of second place finishes
Number of third place finishes
Placement at most recent eligible event
Medal finish at most recent eligible event
Continue as necessary to next most recent eligible event

“Individual commitment to a group effort—that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”
Subjective criteria
All team members are expected to behave in a manner which befits the art of Iaido. Members should remember that they are not only representing the CKF, but that they are Iaido Ambassadors for Canada before, during, and after an event, and particularly at any social event which they may be required or opt to attend. The Manager may provide the final team with a code of conduct and expectations, befitting of an international competitor. Adherence to this is compulsory.
Team members are expected to co-operate and to assist in the building of team spirit. This will also factor into final team selection. The objective is to achieve the best performances in each event and to achieve, overall, the highest possible team and individual results, while also extended CKF membership exposure and benefits through tournament participation.
Code of Conduct: Mandatory adherence as assessed by the Team Manager.
Coachable: Demonstrates a willingness and ability to communicate with coaches, adapt to new strategies and tactics, and receive and understand feedback.
Development Progress: Evidence of progression towards development goals as defined and assessed by the Team Coach.
Team Compatibility: Evidence of positive attitude, leadership, and team compatibility assessed by TCIP Committee and a 360 review with other candidates/members.
Work Ethic: Evidence of consistent and concerted effort which is not conditional on the environment, coach, or teammates.
Responsible: Accepts accountability for one's actions. Demonstrated ability to self-direct and does not rely on others for support or guidance.
Impact: Potential of positive impact to the individual, their dojo, and the CKF as a whole as assessed by the TCIP Committee in conversation with the candidate’s Sensei and other CKF Iaido leaders.
Contribution to the CKF: As assessed by TCIP Committee as evidenced by scope of tangible initiatives they have led and in conversation with CKF leaders and administrators.
Succession: Candidates under the age of 30 will be given additional consideration for their potential for achieving team objectives (Section 1.1) for many years to come.
